Coils

Vape coils are a key part of any e-cig. It takes power from the battery, absorbs liquid from the tank and then vaporises it. There is a wide selection of coils available, and most tanks use different coils. There are regular (MTL) and sub-ohm (DL) coils available for most Eleaf kits. We have a great selection of coils to suit almost any vaper.

What is a vape coil?

A vape coil is the part of your e-cig that produces the vapour. It absorbs liquid from the tank, takes power from the battery and then vaporises the liquid. The coil itself is usually one of two types. First is the more traditional coil that looks like a small spring. Then there’s a newer style which is mesh, or net, and looks like a little chain links. Due to the increased surface area, mesh coils are generally better for flavour and vapour.

The resistance of the coil, as well as the wattage setting of the battery, determines how much vapour your kit can produce. There are two kinds of coil available:

Standard Coils

Coils above 1.0ohm are known as ‘mouth to lung (MTL)’ and are generally used with lower power kits such as the iJust D20. Standard coils are most often found in starter kits and more closely replicate the feel of a cigarette.

Sub-ohm Coils

Sub-ohm coils produce lots of vapour and are vaped ‘direct to lung (DL)’. These coils are anything under 1.0ohm and the lower the resistance, the more vapour it will produce. Sub-ohm coils are usually used with higher power kits such as the iJust AIO Pro or the iStick i80.

Which coil should I choose?

Which coil you choose depends on two main things: how tight or airy you want your draw to be and how powerful the device itself is. If you’re looking to mimic the draw of a cigarette, then standard coils are best. So, any kit that uses the GTL 1.2ohm coils would be perfect. For larger clouds, then a device that uses the GTL 0.4ohm coils would be better.

If you’re unsure which coils your kit takes, you can find it on the product page for all of our kits, which coils are compatible.

When do I change my coil?

When a coil comes to the end of its life, two things generally happen: the coil will start to taste burnt or the coil will no longer provide much flavour. A burnt coil is nothing to worry about, it’s just something that vapers have to deal with. Simply change your coil when it starts to taste weak or starts to taste burnt.

Some coils can also begin to leak slightly when the coil needs to be changed. This is due to the cotton inside the coil not being able to absorb the liquid as well as it did when it was new.

How to Improve Coil Lifespan

There are several things you can do to get the most out of your coil’s lifespan.

Firstly, you need to properly prime the coil before you begin to vape on it. All this means is adding a few drops of liquid to the inside of the coil. It’s best if you wait 5–10 minutes after you’ve filled your tank before you vape it. This ensures that the cotton is nice and saturated before it’s activated.

The next thing you can do is not let the liquid level inside your tank drop below the wicking holes on the outside of your coil. Letting the liquid drop below these holes means that the cotton may not completely absorb enough liquid, resulting in a burn or ‘dry hit’.

Lastly, to get the most out of your coils, you need to make sure you’re using the appropriate liquid for your coil. To find out which liquid is best for your coil, see our e-liquid category.
